A 4-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine is an advanced CNC system with an additional axis of motion beyond the standard X, Y, and Z axes found in 3-axis machines. This fourth axis, often called the A-axis, introduces a rotary motion that allows the workpiece to rotate during machining. This added capability enables the machine to perform more intricate operations, making it possible to create parts with curved or angled surfaces and more complex geometries.

4-axis CNC machining introduces an additional rotary axis to the traditional three linear axes (X, Y, and Z), allowing the cutting tool or workpiece to rotate around the A-axis. This fourth axis provides enhanced flexibility in machining complex components by enabling the tool to access different sides of the workpiece without requiring manual repositioning.   • Indexed 4-Axis CNC
    The rotary axis positions the workpiece at specific angles and locks it in place before machining. Standard 3-axis movement is then used for cutting, with the rotary axis repositioning the workpiece between cuts. This setup is effective for parts requiring precise angular positioning and machining on multiple sides.

  • Continuous 4-Axis CNC
    In this configuration, the rotary axis remains in constant motion during machining, enabling the cutting tool to follow curved or angled paths without interruption. Continuous 4-axis CNC is ideal for creating sculpted or contoured parts that demand smooth, complex surface features.

Software for 4-Axis CNC

Specialized software is needed to generate and edit tool paths for 4-axis machining. Popular programs like Mastercam, Fusion 360, and SolidCAM support 4-axis capabilities, allowing operators to control the machine’s movement with high precision.
