Mill-it-Mini with 4th Axis
Check out Ian’s amazing work making miniature furniture on the Mill it mini. The STEPCRAFT 4th axis module has been configured on the machine. Ian has made a super little sub table on his manual mill and the machine is now up and running making tassel moulds
Mini furniture making setup
Ian has the Mill-it-Mini running on the UCCNC controller. The system is set up with a STEPCRAFT 4th axis on the A axis of the UCCNC controller.
Ian is using VcarvePro and their wrapping function to make the parts. The results are very impressive. The largest diameter feature in the image shown is 2.64mm and the leg is 24.78mm long.

The slats, 0.8 mm thick, for the back were cut in XYZ on the Mill-it-Mini and then steam bent using a former made also in the XYZ on the Mini.
The legs and stretchers were made using the 4th Axis on the Mill-it Mini. The features are that the bottom of the legs are tapered. The stretchers are tapered and the pommels (top of the back legs) are delightful to observe. The stretcher mortise holes are machined at the correct angles as are the slots for the slats in the back legs. The back legs are a combination of turned profile (Gadget in VCarve Pro 8.5) from the foot to the pommel but not including the pommel, GCode generation for the stretcher and slat mortises with ‘A’ axis position and finally turned profile for the pommel. The finishing is Liquitex satin acrylic varnish, airbrushed, and the upholstery is 2 mm silk ribbon (note the drawing calls for 1” webbing so 25.4 divided by 12 comes to 2 and a bit mm, however, the 2 mm was a bit nominal and it just fitted in nicely. Other colour combinations are being carried out as I machined 4 off as machining on the Mini it was easy to create more.
